I have been working with Vista for only a few days, I really need to get used to this. Now I have figured out that if you goof the partition, just throw in the disk and follow the fix system prompts! Talk about easier! I have just been playing with the DVD aspect of things. It gives me 3 choices
Media Centre; This allows me to get some tv channels if I was to hook up some sort of a tuner
Quick Play; This allows quick playing of the movies
Media player; This is just like all MS media players that I have used
I have also been playing with the features of the OS. Not too sure how I like things yet still too new to rely on anything. I do like the feature of Windows key and tab key to switch between windows… I also like the speed of it over all, but I am not too sure if it is the amount of RAM I have or the OS at this point. The only way to find that out is to install it with less ram and see what happens from there. I have only run into one program that will not load under this OS, but like most things, this will improve in time. I think what any vendor should do is release the new OS to other vendors to allow these other company’s to get their products working with it. Is this such a bad request?
That is enough about my ranting. I am now doing a scan for Spyware, and so far it is going well. Only 3 files detected. Now I just have to keep playing with things and learn this OS. So far I am liking this version, just wish that I knew more about it. Time to download some e-books on it. I had downloaded and installed Open Office to see if what I had been hearing about it not working under Windows Vista were true, let me tell you. It is false as is the rumour saying that Firefox does not work well under Vista I installed that one on the first boot! It works very well.
Here is a list of Open Source Software that works from first hand knowledge
Thunderrbird Mail
Firefox
Open Office 2.0
NVU I use this software for working on various web designs
Here is a web site just for downloading some of the Open Source Software in Windows
http://www.opensourcewindows.org/
Maybe this will help people a little bit. The main reason I have this link is because a lot of people I know are die hard windows fans and will only try windows. This is fine, but at least give open source a shot. Open Office is probably the best thing to come along since cream cheese because it is sort of like Microsoft Office and has a lot of the same capabilities, just it is free to use and download. I use it mainly for the free aspect and the fact the you can create a document in windows and cross it over to Linux without having the problems of cross platforming it.
I also use Firefox web browser as I feel it is a lot more stable and causes a whole lot less problems in the long run (plus more security) IE 7 I find sucks too bad even for Microsoft and should be banned by big corps for the lack of effort on Microsofts part. I have now been using this for more than a month and it all seems to be going well, my main problem is the fact that I have no time to keep logging into Windows and Linux.
